The technology from AMD has powered the latest PlayStation consoles, and the two companies have been working together for years. Now, they have announced a new alliance to embark on a major project.
This project is called Project Amethyst, which aims to leverage artificial intelligence and machine learning to create better video games. It is an initiative designed to benefit the entire industry, not just PlayStation hardware.
The project has several key objectives, many of which will unfold in the coming years. Its results could play a significant role in the technology that powers the PlayStation 6 and other upcoming hardware.
What is Project Amethyst, PlayStation and AMD’s new initiative?
Sony and PlayStation recently released a video in which Mark Cerny, the chief architect of the PS5 and PS5 Pro, discusses the powerful console technology and their new partnership with AMD, which will extend for several years.
One of their most important projects is Amethyst, which seeks to create AI-powered technology that will enhance the graphics and gameplay of future video games. Specifically, the goal is to use machine learning to optimize graphics and gameplay for upcoming releases.
What's interesting is that this technology will be used across various devices, potentially including the PlayStation 6. Additionally, we know it will be employed in other hardware AMD is working on, though the details are not yet known. Therefore, this will not be PlayStation-exclusive technology.
Cerny explained that Project Amethyst has two main objectives. The first is to create a set of high-quality neural networks to enhance graphics. Sony and AMD will be free to use this technology in their projects.
“These components should be key in increasing the richness of game graphics as well as enabling more extensive use of ray tracing and path tracing.”
Additionally, the aim is to generate a more complex architecture for machine learning. This will be applied to projects intended for consoles, PCs, and cloud gaming.
“But ML use in games shouldn’t and can’t be restricted to graphics libraries. We’re also working towards a democratization of machine learning something accessible that allows direct work in AI and ML by game developers both for graphics and for gameplay.”
When will we see the first results of Project Amethyst?
Cerny was clear in stating that there’s still a lot of work ahead before the first results of Project Amethyst are visible. He suggested that its application could take several more years, making it likely to be one of the pillars for the PlayStation 6.
Unfortunately, Cerny declined to share more information about the project, and he did not discuss Sony’s upcoming console or the devices that will take advantage of Project Amethyst’s potential in the future.
