The studio explained why they decided to do a crossover with an inactive series

Arrowhead Game Studios achieved unprecedented success with Helldivers 2, one of PlayStation's most successful releases. The company plans to deliver even more content for its popular sequel, and after a long wait, it has finally fulfilled one of its community’s most requested features.

The game just received its first collaboration, allowing players to obtain themed content for a limited time. What’s surprising and exciting is that this crossover is with a forgotten PlayStation franchise: Killzone, a series by Guerrilla Games that has been on hold since the success of Horizon.

Arrowhead understands that this choice might surprise some players, so the developers shared why they decided to revive the franchise through additional content for Helldivers 2.

Helldivers 2 Introduces Killzone 2 Content—Why Did Guerrilla’s Franchise Return?

Surprisingly, Helldivers 2 now offers special content inspired by Killzone 2, widely regarded as one of the best games in Guerrilla’s series. This crossover is part of a new tier of premium content, which seems to be focused on collaborations.

Players can now purchase a themed armor set, an assault rifle, a banner, a cape, and a title from the in-game store. Additionally, Arrowhead plans to release another batch of Killzone 2-inspired content on December 23.

The studio hinted at additional rewards for the community, though their release will depend on “success in the Galactic War.” Moreover, Arrowhead announced an extension for the availability of items in the store.

So, why did they choose Killzone for the collaboration instead of another franchise? The company explained that Guerrilla’s universe aligns well with Helldivers 2, making it a natural fit for the game’s first crossover.

"We decided a long time ago to do crossovers only if and when they make perfect sense for the game. So in that spirit, we're hyped to announce our very first crossover: Killzone 2."

PlayStation Fans Want Killzone to Return

In recent years, Guerrilla has focused on Horizon, a franchise that achieved massive success with its debut title. However, this shift came at the expense of Killzone, whose last entry was Shadow Fall for PlayStation 4.

A revival of the series seems unlikely, as Guerrilla has stated that it prefers to work on new projects. Despite this, a group of fans asked Sony to loan them the rights to the IP to develop new projects, but the company has yet to respond to their request.
