Fans fear system will arrive earlier than expected and shorten current generation

In mid-2023, the first details about the PlayStation 6, Sony's next-generation console, began to surface. Documents related to the Activision Blizzard acquisition and other leaks revealed information about the hardware, including a potential release window and some technical details.

Reports about the PlayStation 6 keep emerging, but instead of excitement, they are causing worry and disappointment among fans. Many believe the console might hit the market earlier than expected, a move that doesn't sit well with the community.

In case you missed it, documents related to the Activision Blizzard acquisition suggest that the PlayStation 6 will launch sometime in 2028. This leaves about four years for players to fully enjoy the PlayStation 5.

However, part of the community believes the console could arrive sooner, as rumors and reports continue to grow. For many, this would be disappointing, as they feel the current generation has yet to hit its stride and that the arrival of new hardware would doom it entirely.

Some players have already expressed frustration, noting that hearing about the PS6 while the PS5 hasn't fully taken off is annoying. Many have used this opportunity to voice their dissatisfaction with the current generation, which they feel has been underwhelming.

"If we somehow get a PS6 within the next 2 years – this could be considered the ‘Lost Generation’ of consoles. It literally has zero identity. What a waste," remarked one fan.

“Hearing PS6 rumors is really sad, PS5 gen felt like it never really existed and started yet. Damn.”

It’s worth noting, however, that reports and rumors about the PlayStation 6 don’t necessarily mean the console's launch is imminent. For years, we’ve heard about the Switch 2, yet it still hasn’t been officially revealed.

With that in mind, the logical assumption is that the Activision Blizzard documents point to a more realistic release window. That said, Sony has yet to provide any official details about its next console.

What Do We Know About the PlayStation 6?

According to leaks, Sony's new console will be powered by an AMD chip. The Japanese company is reportedly collaborating with the tech giant to develop custom chipsets that ensure backward compatibility.

Additionally, PlayStation 6 is rumored to feature Ray Reconstruction, a technology associated with ray tracing and AI-based upscaling tools. It is also expected to enhance PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), a technology already present in the PlayStation 5 Pro.

Lastly, it’s rumored that Sony will release two systems for the next generation: the PlayStation 6 as a home console and a mysterious new portable system.
