Today brought excellent news for One Piece fans, with a look at the progress made by WIT STUDIO. While the overall reaction to the initial details of the project has been positive, there is something that has left fans dissatisfied: the updated appearance of Usopp, but they shouldn't be.
Among the various sketches and concept art displayed for The One Piece, the project team revealed the designs for the Straw Hat Pirates: Luffy, Zoro, Sanji, Nami, and Usopp.

The one that drew the most attention was Usopp, whose skin tone appears lighter, contrasting with the image many fans have of the character after seeing him in dozens of anime episodes or, more recently, in Netflix’s live-action adaptation.
Several people pointed this out and even criticized the inconsistency, arguing that it was inconceivable for Usopp's skin tone to be as light as Nami, Luffy, and Zoro.
"He's getting whiter and whiter," commented a user on Twitter (X).
"Usopp's whitewashing needs to be studied," said another.
"They ruined my black character," wrote another unhappy fan.
Did Netflix Whitewash Usopp for the One Piece Remake?
Indeed, Usopp shows a darker tone in the anime produced by Toei Animation (which has varied in color throughout the episodes), but the issue is that some fans are using these versions as the original reference for this remake, when in fact, Netflix's project, The One Piece, aims to adhere to the original material, that is, the manga created by Eiichiro Oda.
Given this, it makes sense that Usopp in the new anime has lighter skin, as in the original work, his skin tone matches that of the other characters, as seen in the comparisons below.
It should be noted, however, that the remake or at least the official character designs for this project show a somewhat faded coloration, not just for Usopp, but for all characters, making the colors appear very light.
Remember, though, that these sketches are preliminary, and it is unknown how different the final versions of the characters we will see in the anime will be.
In case you missed it: Olympic athletes have expressed their love for animes like One Piece at Paris 2024.
