Certainly, the last months of 2023 were filled with exciting news that sparked much discussion. One of the most interesting was the confirmation of a live-action movie for The Legend of Zelda. Now, its director has provided more information about the approach and style the project might have.

The live-action adaptation will be helmed by American director Wes Ball, known for his work on the Maze Runner film series. Interestingly, he is a big fan of the Nintendo franchise and even dreamed of a film adaptation 13 years ago.

Wes Ball wants The Legend of Zelda movie to be a Hayao Miyazaki-style live-action

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, the filmmaker reaffirmed his love for Link's adventures and expressed his desire to create a project that is special for fans of the intellectual property.

"It's going to be fantastic. My whole life has kind of led to this moment. I grew up with Zelda, and I think it's the most important IP—I think it's an underexploited IP, if you will. So, I've worked very hard to do something [special]. We don't just try and make it because we can; we make it because we really want to make something really special," said the director.

Regarding the style, Wes Ball mentions that he would like The Legend of Zelda movie to have a fantasy tone; however, he doesn't want it to be like The Lord of the Rings. Instead, he expresses that he would love to see a live-action film reminiscent of the animated productions of acclaimed director Hayao Miyazaki.

Of course, these are ideas that may or may not make it to the final cut. The director is currently overseeing the post-production of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, a film set to be released on May 24, 2024. Once he finishes his responsibilities with that project, he hopes to dive fully into the adaptation of the Japanese video game.

"We're working on the script. If it will be the next [project], it's hard to say exactly. But the plan is, after Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is finished, to take a little break and then dive full-on into [Zelda] and hopefully give the fans what they want and also invite new people in. I think Nintendo's desire is to introduce this world to people that have been around for 40 years," commented Wes Ball.

The release date of the live-action movie for The Legend of Zelda is currently unknown. Although the cast is a mystery, actresses have already expressed interest in playing Zelda. Similarly, fans have proposed actors who could bring Link to life.
