With outstanding releases, 2023 has been a treat for RPG video game enthusiasts. The winning streak continues, and just a few days ago, Sea of Stars, a new retro-styled RPG reminiscent of Japanese genre classics, made its debut. This intriguing offering has captured attention and is already a success.
Sea of Stars is Killing It!
Sabotage Studio announced that the indie game surpassed 100,000 copies sold on its first day in the market. Undoubtedly, this is an impressive achievement, especially when considering that it also debuted on PlayStation Plus and Xbox Game Pass services.
One week after its release, Sea of Stars is still going strong and has now reached another significant sales milestone. In a social media update, the developers confirmed that this role-playing experience has sold 250,000 units since its late August release.
To put its success into perspective, Sabotage Studio admitted in their post that they had expected the RPG to sell that many copies in its first year on the market. Clearly, the commercial performance has far exceeded all expectations, despite competing releases like Baldur’s Gate 3 and Starfield.
Since its launch, Sea of Stars has received very positive reviews from both critics and players. At the time of writing, it boasts an outstanding score of 90 on Metacritic and has "very positive" reviews on Steam. Following its tremendous success, the development studio already has plans for a new game.
But tell us, have you given this experience that harks back to classic JRPGs a try? We'd love to hear from you in the comments.
Sea of Stars is available on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5.
